Biography

Biography Timeline

1988

On 14 October 1988, Gibb and nine other students at The Lear School in Miami performed their first concert. This group was put together by Isaac Ersoff, a mathematics teacher at the school with a background in music. The students performed at lunchtimes and for special events at the school. Despite the fact that their high school closed in early 1989, Gibb and friends, Mike Wolofsky and Matt Ackerman, maintained their friendship.

1991

In 1991, after being his father’s guitar technician for two years, Gibb enrolled in a music school in Miami where he got his degree. He began writing songs, the first of which was a solo effort, “Whiskey Jam”. Other songs penned during this time were “Shadow of Your Dreams” with Emerson Forth and Deniz Kose, “Hole in My Soul” also with Kose, and “Ren and Stevie” with Middle Ear Studio engineer, Scott Glasel and his girlfriend, Amanda Green. This song was a take off on the Nickelodeon cartoon series Ren and Stimpy.

1992

In 1992, Gibb and others including Forth, formed a metal band, SkilletHead, which performed the club circuit in and around Miami. That year Gibb also made occasional appearances as a guitarist backing the Bee Gees. In February 1997, Gibb joined The Underbellys. This five piece band included Billy Velvet (lead vocals), Joel Dasilva (guitarist), Sean ‘Evil’ Gerovitz (bass), Randy Blitz (drums) and Gibb on guitar. The band played venues including the Viper Room in Los Angeles and Don Hills in Greenwich Village. The Underbelly’s, including Gibb, recorded for Columbia Records with Pat DiNizio of The Smithereens as their record producer. This did not result in a recording contract, and the band split up. In November 1997, Gibb performed live with his father and uncles for their ‘One Night Only’ concert in Las Vegas. He also toured with the Smithereens between 1997 and 98.

2000

Gibb joined Nikki Sixx, Bucket Baker and Dave Darling in 58. The concept Sixx had in mind when he formed 58 was of a non-touring, internet promoted entity, that would feature on his new record label, Americoma Records. The name of the band stemmed from the year 1958, in which both Sixx and Darling were born. Their sound, as exemplified on the band’s one and only album released in early 2000, was a self-described mixture of “glam, hip hop, rock, pop, funk and a car crash”. Gibb co-wrote “Who We Are”, which featured on Diet for a New America.

The same year, Gibb appeared in the music video for Black Label Society’s “Counterfeit God” from their 2000 release Stronger Than Death, as the skulls and chains guy. The band did not have a permanent bassist at the time (for the video Mark Wahlberg was stand-in) Gibb joined Zakk Wylde’s Black Label Society as bass player in the spring 2000. Alcohol Fueled Brewtality, Black Label Society’s (B.L.S.) live album was recorded in October 2000 and released on 16 January 2001. Gibb’s backing vocals can be heard on tracks like “Stronger Than Death”. The Ozzfest 2001: The Second Millennium album included the track “Superterrorizer” recorded at Alpine Valley Music Theatre, East Troy, Wisconsin on 9 June. Shortly after this, just weeks into the American Ozzfest schedule, Gibb left the band for personal reasons.

2002

He married Gloria Levas in November 2002. They have a daughter, born in December 2002 and a son, born in 2006. Currently Gibb and his family live in Miami, Florida.

2003

The Outkast Talent Agency in Miami were asked to find numerous extras for the Michael Bay film Bad Boys II released in 2003. Gibb appeared briefly in the opening scenes as a klansman.

The track “Stormy” performed by 58 was used in The Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde Rock n’ Roll Musical in 2003. It was nominated for Best Film Score at Europe’s Fennec Awards.

2004

In early 2004, Kirk Windstein (founder of Crowbar) planned a rebirth for Crowbar and rebuilt the band with Gibb as guitarist, Pat Bruders on bass and Tommy Buckley on drums. Their European tour of 2004 was a success, the highlight of which was their performance at the With Full Force Festival in Leipzig, Germany. This became the core of the 2007 released DVD Crowbar: Live With Full Force Gibb, assisting John-Martin Vogel, produced a mix of live footage, backstage capers and interview pieces. The band has consistently toured Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States. The band’s 2005 album, Lifesblood for the Downtrodden, was mastered at Middle Ear Studios (owned by Gibb’s father).

2005

In 2005, Windstein teamed up with Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed to form a new side venture called Kingdom of Sorrow. The band’s self-titled debut album was released on 19 February 2008 by Relapse Records. It debuted at No. 131 on the US Billboard charts and sold 6,000 records in its first week of release. The album was recorded at Planet Z with producer Zeuss, known for his work with Shadows Fall and many others. Stephen performed some solos and leads on a few tracks on this album and also went on the initial promotional tour I late February early March 2008. In 2007, Gibb played on his father’s single “Drown On the River”.

2006

In September 2006, Gibb, his father and brother Ashley, wrote “Drown on the River”, which is included in the Burt Reynolds 2007 film Deal.

2008

At the 34th Love and Hope Ball, held at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa in 2008, Stephen, his siblings and their partners were inducted as the first Young Society Honourees.

2009

Gibb left Crowbar in 2009, citing family and business commitments in Miami.

For many years Stephen’s parents have been International Chairpersons of the Love and Hope Committee for the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation based in Miami, Florida. Annually a black tie gala is held to raise funds for research and frequently Barry Gibb performs. In 2009, 2012 and 2014 Stephen accompanied his father. In 2009 Stephen performed his own composition “Living in the Rain”, dedicating this debut performance of the song to his wife Gloria.

2013

The first leg of the tour took in Australia and New Zealand in February 2013. Steve performed as a solo the bluegrass track written by Maurice Gibb “On Time”, and took second vocals on the Bee Gees hit “I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You”. The second leg went to England and Northern Ireland in September 2013. The Track “Fight (No Matter How Long)” was added as Stephen’s second solo. The track had been written in 1986 as part of the Bunbury Tails. The third leg was six US dates in May 2014, as part of the promotion Stephen performed with Barry on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, 21 May 2014. In 2015 Steve toured North America as the guitarist for the band Jasta fronted by Jamey Jasta.

Biography

Biography Timeline

1954

Sathyaraj was born as Rangaraj Mandradiar on 3 October 1954 to Subbaiyan and Nathambal, with two younger sisters, namely Kalpana Mandradiar and Roopa Senapathy (wife of Dr. Periannan Senapathy). He is an ardent fan of M. G. Ramachandran and Rajesh Khanna. Sathyaraj completed his primary school education in St Mary’s Convent school, Coimbatore and later studied for tenth standard from Suburban High School, Ramnagar, Coimbatore. He went to Government Arts College, Coimbatore for a Bachelor of Science degree in Botany.

1976

Sathyaraj’s dream was to become a film actor, but his mother was against it and forbid him to join cinema. In 1976, in spite of his mother’s opposition, he left Coimbatore to enter the Tamil film industry based in Kodambakkam, Chennai.

1978

Sathyaraj entered the film industry after witnessing the shooting of the film Annakili, where he met actor Sivakumar and producer Thiruppur Manian and started pestering them to help him fulfill his cinematic ambitions. Sivakumar vehemently criticized his interest in acting and advised him to immediately return home. Nevertheless, he remained in Chennai. Producer Maathampatty Sivakumar supported him with sending money every month. He joined the drama troupe of Komal Swamynathan. Sathyaraj’s first film in a credited role as an actor was Sattam En Kaiyil, in 1978, where he played a henchman to the main villain played by Thengai Srinivasan in the film. Later, he worked as production manager for the film Kannan Oru Kaikkuzhanthai.

1979

Sathyaraj Is married to Maheswari in 1979, niece of producer Madhampatti Sivakumar, and had two children, Divya (daughter) and Sibiraj (son), also an actor. Sathyaraj is a staunch atheist.

1984

In his early career between 1978 and 1982, the antagonistic roles he played were often henchman to the main villain M. N. Nambiar and other villains and his role would be minor, while the main lead was Sivaji Ganesan, Jaishankar, Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth and Vijayakanth. His college friend Manivannan directed Sathyaraj for the first time in the Tamil film January 1 in 1984, where Sathyaraj had a supporting role. Manivannan directed Sathyaraj in about 25 films from 1984 to 2013 and of them 18 had Sathyaraj as the main lead. His screen space as a villain increased after 24 Mani Neram (1984), directed by Manivannan, in which Sathyaraj’s role was on par with that of lead actor Mohan. His acting skills in the film were noticed by many and he became famous among the Tamil film audience. Sathyaraj also felt that his villainous roles in Nooravathu Naal and Anbin Mugavari, both again directed by Manivannan, had better footage than that of Vijayakanth’s and Mohan’s. In Needhiyin Nizhal (1985), which featured Prabhu in the lead role, Sathyaraj had a minuscule supporting role and played second fiddle to the main villain M. N. Nambiar. Sathyaraj started receiving offers to act as the hero in Tamil films from 1985. Directors were reluctant to cast him as the protagonist as his second film as a lead actor Iravu Pookkal (1985) was not a success. Most of the films he was part of were of the action genre in this period.

1985

In addition to his managerial role, he also had a small acting part in the film. His first film as the leading hero in Tamil was Saavi in 1985, which was a box office success. He acted in about 75 films from 1978 to 1985 till films, most of which featured Sathyaraj in antagonist roles.

1986

In the 1986 film Kadalora Kavithaigal, he played the lead romantic role and Behindwoods said: “Sathyaraj broke his image of an action hero and came up with a rollicking performance. He is the real star of the film.” He received appreciation for playing his role in Mr. Bharath (1986), which revolved around the conflict between father, played by Sathyaraj and son (Rajinikanth). Sathyaraj acted as Rajinikanth’s father in the film, though he was in fact 4 years younger than Rajinikanth. Manivanan, being friends with Sathyaraj, kept casting him in roles in his directorial ventures, regularly showcasing different emotions from Sathyaraj in films such as Muthal Vasantham, Palaivana Rojakkal and Vidinja Kalyanam.

1994

In the 90s, he attempted more films of comedy and action genres and occasionally did romantic films. He had few unsuccessful films such as Madurai Veeran Enga Saami, Magudam, Pangali, and Kattalai in this period as he became selective of choosing his roles as main lead hero. Many of them were commercially successful, such as Velai Kidaichuduchu, Nadigan, Pudhu Manithan, Rickshaw Mama, Walter Vetrivel, Airport, Thai Maaman Veera Padhakkam and Azhagarsamy. Sathyaraj played a dual role as father and son in the box office hit Amaithipadai, which is considered among his best performances. With regard to the film, he has stated: “I have no words for that film, as it took me to the next level as an actor”. He also said that he almost did not sign up for the film as it was an antagonist character and he had moved away from antagonist roles and “gained some respectability” with films such as Poovizhi Vaasalile, Vedham Pudhidhu and Walter Vetrivel. After Thai Maaman became successful in 1994, the same team of Sathyaraj and director Guru Dhanapal decided to do their next venture Maaman Magal in 1995, which was also a moderate hit. He acted, produced and directed in his 125th film Villadhi Villain, which had him in three distinct roles and it was a successful project.

2000

The year 2000 proved to be unsuccessful for Sathyaraj. 4 films between 2000 and 2001 Veeranadai, Puratchikkaaran, Aandan Adimai and the comedy film Looty were failures while his commercially successful films were Sundar C.’s Unnai Kann Theduthey, P. Vasu’s comedy film Asathal and Suraj’s Kunguma Pottu Gounder. As many new young actors such as Ajith Kumar, Vijay and Prashanth who debuted in the 1990s had established themselves successfully by 2000, and others such as R. Madhavan, Jiiva and Srikanth made their mark in the mid-2000s and also since Sathyaraj had been using wigs since 1985 in films as he had begun losing hair since then, critics felt Sathyaraj’s career as solo lead actor may end by 2000.

2003

His pairing opposite actress Kushboo and Meena became popular in this decade. The box office hits of the pair Kushboo-Sathyaraj include Nadigan, Bramma, Rickshaw Mama, Kalyana Galatta, Suyamvaram, Malabar Police and Unnai Kann Theduthey, whereas Thozhar Pandian and Veeranadai were not successful at the box office. The on-screen pair of Sathyaraj-Meena together had average grossers such as Thai Maaman, Maaman Magal, Vallal and later in 2003 with Aalukkoru Aasai. His chemistry with actors Goundamani and Senthil has been well received and appreciated by the public and hence they have appeared in many movies together from Vaazhkai Chakkaram in 1990.

Sathyaraj re-invented himself as a romantic hero with the 2002 film Vivaramana Aalu, as a hero Maaran and with his performance in the comedy film Aalukkoru Aasai in 2003. Sathyaraj and director Sakthi Chidambaram’s combination gave 3 consecutive films, Ennamma Kannu, Maha Nadigan and Englishkaran. Ennama Kannu was a super hit. Few films like Ramachandra, Sena, Azhagesan, and Gowravargal received negative reviews in this decade. He co-starred with his son Sibiraj for the first time in Jore which was average. Bizhat described “It’s interesting to watch the father – son combination together in Jore. Sathyaraj then acted with his son in 3 more films Mannin Maindhan, Vetrivel Sakthivel and Kovai Brothers, in which the two were seen as brothers. In 2007, he produced a Tamil film Lee, starring his son .

2007

Films in the 2000s with Sathyaraj in the lead role that fared well at the box office were 6’2, Vanakkam Thalaiva, Kurukshetram, Adavadi, Periyar and Thangam. He received the Vijay Award for Best Actor for Onbadhu Roobai Nottu in 2007 and was also nominated for his performance in Periyar in the same year, in which he portrayed the life of social reformer and rationalist Periyar E. V. Ramasamy. About the role he said, “I myself being a rationalist, I found it easy to portray his character on screen. His principles and ideologies, like fighting for women’s liberation and untouchability, have influenced me to a great extent”.

2009

He ventured into Telugu cinema after long time as a supporting actor in Sankham in 2009 and later did Mirchi in 2012, both of which were successful. He also entered Malayalam cinema with Aagathan in 2009. He played the role of Kattappa in Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and has reprised the role in the sequel Baahubali: The Conclusion (2017).

2013

Sathyaraj and Manivannan shared a close friendship since college and became frequent collaborators in films in Tamil cinema. The Hindu wrote: “His (Manivannan’s) friendship with actor Sathiyaraj translated to several memorable moments on screen. Manivannan…along with Sathyaraj epitomised on screen what is colloquially known in Tamil as “nakkal” (snideness)”. According to Behindwoods.com, Manivannan (as the director) and Sathyaraj had consecutive hit films together beginning from 1987 to 1994; Chinna Thambi Periya Thambi, Ganam Courtar Avargale, Jallikattu, Vaazhkai Chakkaram, Pudhu Manithan, Therku Theru Machan and Amaidhi Padai. About working with Manivannan, he has said that it “is a pleasure. There’s no script, no dialogue sheet. It’s all in his head. But, he extracts great performances”. Sathyaraj and Manivannan also acted together in several films directed by other directors. About his personal relationship with Manivannan, Sathyaraj remarked “I still reminisce about the beautiful moments that I had with…Manivannan, a genius of a person. In fact, he is the one who taught me many things in life, and changed me, I became a good human from being just an actor. Every day, we used to have conversations over the phone on a wide range of topics. It was a 30-year relationship. No one could understand me the way he did”. Manivannan died in 2013 and Sathyaraj has said that just 24 hours before his death they had discussed their next project and that he narrated him a story.

2015

In 2015, at the age of 60, the media and public at large rechristened him as Kattappa, as he received nationwide popularity for his role in India’s biggest motion picture Baahubali: The Beginning. Since the time he made his debut as junior artiste at 24 years of age, he had been wanting to do a historical or a folklore film and it was his long cherished dream. He quoted in an interview in 2015: “I am a great fan of MGR who is popular in folklore films, like NTR in Telugu movies. My dream of doing a folklore at 24 has been realised at 60 through Rajamouli. I played Rajinikanth’s father when I was 31 and Rajini was 35, so I never cared for age..it never mattered to me.”

2016

He acted as lead role in the film Oru Naal Iravil (2015). A faithful remake of much acclaimed Malayalam movie, Shutter has been helmed by editor turned director, Antony with great integrity. Sathyaraj as the middle aged man brings so much life to his character. In 2016, he acted with his son Sibiraj in Jackson Durai, another addition to the popular “Horror-comedy genre”. Followed by the last movie series Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017). He played the role of DC Ratnavel “Randy”, a Police officer in the film Mersal (2017) directed by Atlee. Sathyaraj wins the Best Supporting Actor – Tamil for the movie Kanaa (2018). The following year, he subsequently starred in films like Jersey, Prati Roju Pandage and Thambi.

Biography

Biography Timeline

1948

The only child of Joseph Henry Burnett Jr. and Hazel Perkins Burnett, Burnett was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1948, and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. His grandfather worked as secretary for the Southern Baptist Convention. His father wanted to be a pro athlete and was courted by the Brooklyn Dodgers, but instead he got a job in Fort Worth with the Tandy Corporation. Burnett was brought up in the Episcopal Church of his mother. He forgot the origin of his nickname, which he uses without a dash.

1965

At around the same age, Burnett picked up the guitar. Overwhelmed by seeing the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show, he started garage bands with Bruton. After graduating from high school in 1965, they spent most of their time at Sound City, a recording studio in the basement of a radio station where Burnett became fascinated by recording. He wrote and produced his first song, “Free Soul”, with the Loose Ends under the name Jon T. Bone. His parents had divorced when he was in high school, and his father, with whom he was living, died in 1967. He attended Texas Christian University briefly, then dropped out to work as an artists and repertoire (A&R) agent.

1975

Burnett produced and played drums on “Paralyzed”, the novelty hit by the Legendary Stardust Cowboy. As part of the pseudonymous group Whistler, Chaucer, Detroit, and Greenhill, he appeared on and produced The Unwritten Works of Geoffrey, Etc. (Uni, 1968). During the same year, he produced six songs for a group of friends who called themselves “The Case Hardy Boys”. Later this band would move to Los Angeles and become known first as “The Fare”, then “El Roacho”, and would have songs produced by Burnett, Daniel Moore, and Steve Katz. He moved to Los Angeles and recorded The B-52 Band & the Fabulous Skylarks (Uni, 1972) under the name J. Henry Burnett. In 1975 and 1976, he toured with Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue.

1980

In 1980, Burnett released his first post–Alpha Band solo album, Truth Decay, produced by Reggie Fisher, on the Takoma Records label. Truth Decay was a roots rock album described by the Rolling Stone Record Guide as “mystic Christian blues”. In 1982, his Trap Door EP (also produced by Reggie Fisher), released on the Warner Brothers label, yielded the FM radio hit “I Wish You Could Have Seen Her Dance”. Burnett toured after the release of Trap Door, opening several dates for The Who, leading a band that featured Mick Ronson on guitar. His 1983 album Proof Through the Night, whose song “When the Night Falls” got some FM airplay, and his 1987 album The Talking Animals were more in the vein of 1980s new wave music, while his self-titled 1986 album was an album of acoustic country music. His 1992 album The Criminal Under My Own Hat tended toward adult album alternative music.

1985

In 1985, Burnett collaborated with Elvis Costello on the single “The People’s Limousine”, using the moniker “The Coward Brothers”. In 1987, he produced Roy Orbison’s two-record album, In Dreams: The Greatest Hits and two songs of Mystery Girl. Also in 1997, he wrote songs for the Sam Shepard play The Tooth of Crime: Second Dance, which premiered off-Broadway in New York City with Vincent D’Onofrio and Kirk Acevedo. An album of these songs, Tooth of Crime, was released in May 2008, featuring guitarist Marc Ribot, Sam Phillips, and David Poe, whose self-titled debut Burnett also produced that year. According to Burnett, he was inspired by the music of Skip James while composing songs for the updated version of Shepard’s play.

1989

Burnett and singer-songwriter Sam Phillips were married in 1989 and divorced in 2004. He produced many of her albums, including Martinis & Bikinis and Cruel Inventions. He married Callie Khouri in 2006. He has three daughters, including one from his marriage to Phillips.

1992

In 1992, Burnett worked on some songs with his friend River Phoenix for the movie The Thing Called Love. He was the coach of Samantha Mathis.

2000

In 2000, Burnett produced the soundtrack and wrote the score for the Coen Brothers film O Brother, Where Art Thou?. The award-winning soundtrack featured music from Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Ralph Stanley, Gillian Welch, and others performing traditional American folk music, blues and bluegrass – reminiscent of Burnett’s 1986 self-titled release. The album was a hit, garnering numerous industry awards from the Grammys, the Academy of Country Music, and the Country Music Association. The album was a commercial success and sold almost eight million copies, according to Billboard.
